Built Environment Education in the Kindergarten

  • 1329

From a very early age, children are capable of consciously perceiving, using, and evaluating the physical environment that surrounds them. Exploring, using, and shaping the built environment has an extraordinary importance in socialization processes and cognitive development. Therefore, it is important to start at a very young age to develop spatial consciousness, spatial skills, and a sensitivity for the built environment – by utilizing toy blocks, hut building, and other complex, playful methods of development. The book entitled Built Environment Education in the Kindergarten emphasizes the role of built environment culture in pre-school development, and gives advice on methodology to those kindergarten educators, architects, or parents who want to consciously strengthen children’s connection to the built environment.

What will the reader find in this book? In the first part of the volume, we present the theory of built environment education, including the specific objectives, contents, and relevance of this pedagogical field. What is the built environment, why does it matter to pay attention to it, and how can we sensitize the children about its importance? We are searching for answers for fundamental questions such as these in the first chapter.

The second part of the book covers the connections between built environment education and pre-school education. We give an overview of the practice of built environment education in the kindergarten, and discuss the ways in which architecture-related contents can appear in kindergarten activities.

The third part of the book comprises a thematically structured collection of methodologies. It contains detailed, tested activities and game plans that can be flexibly applied in kindergarten practice. The tasks are divided into thematic weeks, this way the collection of exercises can be used to organize single activities or even entire thematic weeks.

The publication of the volume was supported by the Chamber of Hungarian Architects and the National Cultural Fund of Hungary.
