Architecture and Education conference series
ARCHITECTURE AND EDUCATION CONFERENCE SERIES
In 2017 and 2018, we organized the conference series Architecture and Education with the goal to reveal the latest directions and results in built environment education to a professional audience.
The series of events was made more relevant by the fact that the National Core Curriculum currently in effect includes the concepts of built environment and architecture, providing diverse opportunities in formal education. Moreover, section 14 of the Government Decree No. 1032, published in January 2015 regarding building and construction, orders the promotion of spatial and architectural culture from pre-school to higher education. Based on this decree, the Chamber of Hungarian Architects and the kultúrAktív Association cooperate in the dissemination of built environment education.
The series of conferences discussed the current situation and the development opportunities of built environment education in three parts: 1) the status of the field in higher education, including the latest relevant scientific results; 2) the role of the architectural profession; and 3) its application in pre-school education.
I. CONFERENCE ON BUILT ENVIRONMENT EDUCATION IN HIGHER EDUCATION
Date: 11 May 2017
Location: Szent István University, Ybl Miklós Faculty of Architecture
How are architecture and pedagogy connected to each other in higher education? The conference discussed this question from different scientific angles. In recent years, built environment education has appeared in a growing number of university faculties as part of a subject or as an individual course. The goal of the conference was to present these initiatives and provide opportunity for a professional discourse that could, in the long run, strengthen the role of built environment education in higher education.

II. ARCHITECTS IN SCHOOLS CONFERENCE
Date: November 2-3, 2017
Location: University of Pécs Faculty of Engineering and IT
Fostering the skills of perceiving, using and shaping space, and transferring knowledge about the built environment need to be part of teaching and education starting from the youngest age in order to promote the need for a quality environment and an awareness of aesthetical and social issues in the next generations. The presentations and professional workshops of the conference discussed applying the methodology, fundamental knowledge and pedagogical opportunities of built environment education in primary and pre-school education, comprehensive art education, and in preschool and elementary school teacher training.
In recent years, there have been a growing number of initiatives where architects assume a role in education, and lead educational programs in schools or outside schools. In several neighboring countries, systems have been put in place to ensure the long-term pedagogical commitment of architects. The conference explored, through practical examples, the ways architects can take part in pedagogical activities, and discussed why it is important for both society and the architectural profession to assume a role in built environment education.

III. CONFERENCE ON BUILT ENVIRONMENT EDUCATION IN EARLY CHILDHOOD
Date: 6 April 2018
Location: Budapest, ELTE Faculty of Primary and Pre-School Education
Fostering the skills of perceiving, using and shaping space, and transferring knowledge about the built environment need to be part of teaching and education starting from the youngest age in order to promote the need for a quality environment and an awareness of aesthetical and social issues in the next generations. The presentations and professional workshops of the conference discussed applying the methodology, fundamental knowledge and pedagogical opportunities of built environment education in primary and pre-school education. The presentations examined the topic primarily in the context of comprehensive art education and art and visual culture teacher training for elementary schools.
The goal of the symposium, beyond presenting the latest research findings and best practices, was to offer an opportunity for the exchange of experience and professional networking. The program was complemented by international presentations and informal, interactive programs, including collaborative brainstorming and exchange of personal experiences.
The conference discussed the current situation and development opportunities of built environment education in teacher training in two markedly different sessions. In the first session, the participants could learn from the presentations of leading professionals from Hungary and around the world; the information could be utilized in practice in the interactive workshops and creative studio work of the second session. The elaborated and tested exercises can be used as models in the participants’ future work in teacher training and public education.
The conference was jointly organized by kultúrAktív, the ELTE Faculty of Primary and Pre-School Education, and the Bálványos Huba Visual Education Research Workshop.
